The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) last week announced its 2020 targeted construction goals for the Purple Line Extension project.

In order to remain on schedule to complete the project in 2023, crews this year must tunnel west to Wilshire/La Cienega Station and add 3,280 more feet of tunnels; finish piling for the Wilshire/Rodeo Station; complete early utility relocation in Westwood; and start piling for the Westwood/UCLA Station, LA Metro officials said in a project newsletter.

The project —which will extend the route 9 miles west of the Purple Line’s current terminus and add seven stations to connect riders between downtown Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Westwood — will be completed in three sections.

The first section involves crews this year adding permanent ventilation systems to twin tunnels between the existing Wilshire/Western Station and the new Wilshire/La Brea Station, and building cross passages connecting the tunnels.

Construction of the Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations is proceeding underground; instrumentation and utility work also will continue this year.

Last week, crews began street reconstruction around the Wilshire/Rodeo Station area in Beverly Hills to prepare for adding 260 piles needed to support the station. Piling will continue through July. That work is part of the second section of the extension.

This month, crews will assemble tunnel boring machines in the second section at Constellation Boulevard.

Crews will relocate utilities on the line's third section in Westwood to prepare for construction of the Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital stations. That work will be completed this spring, with heavy construction to begin in summer.
