New Jersey Transit yesterday began construction of a new power substation at the Bay Head rail yard on the North Jersey Coast Line.
The project — funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) — involves replacing two existing substations that were damaged by a storm surge during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
The new substation will be protectively encased and elevated above anticipated saltwater storm surges and flooding levels. Crews also will install a new backup generator and a connection to the public electric grid, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.
Substations supply electric power to the catenary, rail yard and equipment facilities’ systems. The Bay Head Substation project is part of NJ Transit’s ongoing resiliency program.
T.Y Lin International is the project's construction manager. PKF-Mark III Inc. is the firm constructing the substation itself.
