Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last month logged on-time performance improvements on the MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subway, MTA Long Island Island Rail Road (LIRR) and MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA officials announced Tuesday.
In January, NYCT weekday subway on-time performance was 83 percent, the highest of any January since 2013, MTA officials said in a press release.
Last month, 29 major weekday incidents caused delays on the subway, a 44 percent improvement compared with January 2019's level and the fewest of any month since record-keeping began in 2015. Weekday train delays in January were 30,318, down 28 percent from the same month last year.
Meanwhile, Metro-North’s on-time performance in January rose 1.5 percentage points to 97 percent.
The improvement marks the 14th consecutive month of improved on-time performance for Metro-North and the railroad’s best performance since April 2014.
LIRR’s on-time performance in January was 93 percent, a record for the month since 2012.
Subway and railroad ridership also increased in 2019. NYCT subway ridership reached 1.7 billion trips in 2019, 1 percent above 2018's level. LIRR logged 91.1 million trips in 2019, the highest since 1949, and Metro-North logged 86.6 million trips, an all-time record.
