The North County Transit District (NCTD) tomorrow will mark 25 years of Coaster commuter-rail service in San Diego.

NCTD officials will commemorate the anniversary by offering free Coaster rides from the Oceanside Transit Center. NCTD will host anniversary events at a different Coaster stations each month.

Since its 1995 launch, the service has grown from six morning trains and six evening trains to 22 weekday trains and eight weekend trains.

The commuter-rail service has an annual ridership of more than 1.4 million and an average weekday ridership of nearly 4,900 riders, NCTD officials said in a press release.

To support the operations, NCTD operates seven locomotives on the San Diego Subdivision of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo corridor.

NCTD will receive five new locomotives by the end of 2020. The agency also has plans to purchase four additional locomotives and 11 passenger rail cars, as well as overhaul the current fleet.

Those additions to the fleet will support an increase in trains operated to 42 from 22 per day over the next 36 months, agency officials said.
