MTA unveils 2020 capex commitments


For first-quarter 2020, the MTA awarded $2.4 billion for resignaling, accessibility and expansion projects.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) yesterday announced the core accessibility, resignaling and system expansion projects scheduled to begin in 2020.

The projects are included in the MTA's 2020-2040 capital program, as well as some prior programs.

For first-quarter 2020, the MTA awarded $2.4 billion for projects, including signal modernization on the Eighth Avenue MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subway line; Phase 1 of the Penn Station-33rd Street Corridor project; accessibility improvements at Livonia Avenue Station; and construction of a third track on the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), MTA officials said in a press release.

For the second quarter, MTA committed $2.8 billion for Phase 2 of the Penn Station-33rd Street Corridor project; overhead rail power improvements; accessibility improvements at 149th Street-Grand Concourse, Tremont Avenue and Westchester Square-East Tremont Avenue stations; elevator and escalator improvements at 11 stations; infrastructure repairs; communication network upgrades; the purchase of new rolling stock and hybrid locomotives; and station and signaling system upgrades on the LIRR.

In the third quarter, MTA will award $4 billion for accessibility improvements at 30 stations; repairs at 10 stations; rehabilitation of the 6 Avenue Line’s East River tunnel; LIRR signal modernization; and the replacement of two LIRR bridges.

MTA will commit $4.3 billion in the fourth quarter for the MTA Metro-North Railroad Penn Station access project; Phase 2 of the Second Avenue subway project; accessibility improvements at four stations; infrastructure improvements, including signal modernization; substation construction; and storm resilience projects.
