Sound Transit's board last week advanced the construction schedule for the infill light-rail station at North East 130th Street in Seattle to minimize future service disruptions when the Lynnwood Link extension opens in 2024.
The board approved completing final design for the entire station, as well as work in the project’s first construction package, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.
In second-quarter 2021, the board will determine whether to advance other construction elements of the station, which could allow the facility to open earlier. The station now is scheduled to open in 2031.
In 2018, a preliminary engineering process confirmed that construction of the infill station over and around an active railway would likely require trains on the Lynnwood Link alignment connecting Northgate in Seattle to Lynnwood in Snohomish County, Washington, to operate on a single track. Advancing the construction schedule should minimize the need for single-track operations, and, therefore, minimize service disruptions, officials said.
