New Jersey Transit has launched a task force to coordinate its response to the outbreak of COVID-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus.
NJ Transit’s internal task force will closely monitor news of the disease and coordinate efforts with the state’s coronavirus task force, which was created by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy earlier this week, agency officials said in a press release.
The agency’s task force includes staff from the NJ Transit's medical, emergency management, environmental, safety and communications departments.
“NJ Transit’s internal task force is meeting regularly, sharing the most up-to-date information obtained from state and federal health officials,” said NJ Transit President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Corbett.
NJ Transit also has increased the frequency of cleaning regimens at all stations and on its buses and commuter- and light-rail cars.
Meanwhile, two rail industry events have been postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Association of American Railroads’ 25th Annual Research Review, originally scheduled for March 9-11, has been rescheduled to June 23-24. The event will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and at the Transportation Technology Center Inc. in Pueblo, Colorado.
Also, the 2020 International Rail Safety Symposium, co-hosted by the the American Public Transportation Association and the Japan International Transport and Tourism Institute, will be postponed until further notice. The event originally was scheduled for March 24 at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C.
