New Jersey Transit last week broke ground on a project to extend the Hudson-Bergen light rail’s West Side Avenue Branch less than a mile from its current terminus at West Side Avenue in Jersey City to a new terminus across Route 440.
The $220 million extension project will include construction of a new station west of Route 440 to serve riders at a future development on the Hackensack River waterfront, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced at a press event last week.
“[The extension] will create an entirely new neighborhood west of Route 440, with new residential and commercial development and parks,” said NJ Transit President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Corbett in a press release from Murphy’s office. “It will provide a convenient connection between Jersey City’s western waterfront and existing transit services, with seamless connections to the [Port Authority Trans-Hudson] train and Lower Manhattan.”
The project is in the preliminary engineering phase.
The 17.5-mile Hudson-Bergen light-rail system operates on three routes to serve Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne, Weehawken, Union City and North Bergenm, New Jersey. The West Side Avenue Branch extends to Tonnelle Avenue Station in North Bergen.
