The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority on May 10 will begin work to complete reconstruction of mainline infrastructure on the Media/Elwyn Line.
The work — which is part of the larger Southwest Connection Improvement Program — includes overhead wire replacement, tree trimming, bridge inspection, interlocking work and rail tunnel repair in the University City, Philadelphia area.
The work will continue through May 30 and require service adjustments on the Airport, Media/Elwyn and Wilmington/Newark lines.
Southwest Connection Improvement Program work was broken into phases of construction to minimize passenger disruption. The first two phases were completed in 2018 and 2019.
Portions of the Media/Elwyn Line are more than 80 years old. The overall program required replacement of the existing Arsenal Interlocking, removal of the Walnut Interlocking, creation of a new interlocking at Penn Medicine Station, upgrade of the Walnut Street rail tunnel and repair of various drainage structures.
