Sound Transit will resume fare collection on its Link light-rail and Sounder commuter-rail systems on June 1.

The Seattle-based agency suspended fare collection on March 21 to encourage social distancing between riders and rail operators to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

During that time, the agency recorded a “dramatic increase” in unsanitary conditions, rider complaints and incidents of vandalism. The problems have been associated in part with riders taking repetitive trips without apparent destinations, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.

Starting today, Sound Transit fare enforcement officers will educate riders about the resumption of fares.

When fare collection resumes, Sound Transit will offer its ORCA Lift promotion, a reduced-fare program that gives income-qualified riders discounts of up to 66 percent on Sound Transit and other regional agencies’ services.
