Calgary’s City Council in Alberta earlier this week approved an updated alignment for the first stage of the planned construction of the Green light-rail line, as well as changes to construction staging.

The approved alignment will connect 16 Avenue North to Shepard Southeast.

Segment 1 of the Green Line is shovel ready, and will be constructed in three segments: Segment 1 from Elbow River to Shepard, Segment 2A from 2 Avenue SW Station to Elbow River, and Segment 2B from 16 Avenue N to north of 2 Avenue SW station.

“Stage 1 builds the core of the Green Line long-term vision and will enable future incremental expansion as funding is available to realize the full benefits of the rapid transit network,” Michael Thompson, general manager of the Green Line, said in a press release.

Later this month, the council will issue a request for qualifications for a design-build partner for the project. By July 24, the council expects to issue a request for proposals.

Detailed design and construction of the segment will begin in 2021, city officials said.
