The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) on Aug. 16 will restore Silver Line service and reopen six stations in Fairfax County, Virginia, the agency announced yesterday.
The reopening date is weeks earlier than originally planned, and reflects the progress crews made on rebuilding deteriorating station platforms and other rail extension integration work, agency officials said in a press release.
WMATA has been speeding up work on some projects during this period of historically low ridership due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this year, the transit agency combined Orange Line platform reconstruction and Silver Line signal integration into a multi-month summer shutdown of the nine rail stations west of Ballston.
The stations reopening in August include McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East stations on the Silver Line, and the West Falls Church Station on the Orange Line.
Three additional stations — Vienna, Dunn Loring and East Falls Church — are expected to reopen in September.
