Officials from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Virginia Department of Transportation and city of Newport News earlier this week broke ground on a $47 million transportation center in the Virginia city.
The transportation center — which will replace the Newport News Amtrak station — will be located at Bland Boulevard between Warwick Boulevard and Interstate 64.
Once construction is complete in summer 2022, the center will also serve as a hub for Hampton Roads Transit buses, taxis and shuttles that serve Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
“This transformational project will provide the residents of Newport News and the surrounding area enhanced transportation options with much improved passenger rail and public transit services,” Newport News Mayor McKinley Price said in a press release.
The Commonwealth of Virginia will fund 44 percent of the project, enough to pay for the Amtrak service facility. Local and regional funds will cover the remaining cost to construct the station building, parking and perform utility work.
