Environmental report drafted for Valley Link passenger-rail project


The proposed Valley Link is a new, 42-mile, seven-station passenger-rail service that would connect the existing Dublin/Pleasanton Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station in Alameda County to the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) North Lathrop Station in San Joaquin County.

The Tri-Valley-San Joaquin Valley Regional Rail Authority in California last week issued a draft environmental impact report (DEIR) for the proposed Valley Link passenger-rail project.

The proposed Valley Link is a new, 42-mile, seven-station passenger-rail service that would connect the existing Dublin/Pleasanton Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Station in Alameda County to the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) North Lathrop Station in San Joaquin County.

The limits of the proposed project span Alameda and San Joaquin counties. Valley Link would use existing transportation corridors: the existing Interstate 580; the Alameda County transportation corridor right-of-way through the Altamont Pass; and the existing Union Pacific Railroad corridor in northern San Joaquin County.

"The release of the draft environmental document for the Valley Link project takes us one step closer to providing congestion relief in one of the most difficult mega-commute corridors in the nation," said Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, who also serves as the rail authority's chairman, in a press release.

The authority is accepting comments on the DEIR, which was drafted to meet the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act, until Jan. 21, 2021. Currently, three online meetings —Dec. 12, Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 — are scheduled to allow public presentation and discussion of the report.
