Sound Transit earlier this week announced civil construction on the agency’s Lynnwood Link light-rail extension is 25% complete.
The $2.9 billion project — which will extend light-rail 8.5 miles into Snohomish County, Washington, by 2024 — made a major advance late last month. Sound Transit construction and contracted crews have installed the first part of falsework to support an elevated light-rail guideway crossing Interstate 5 in Mountlake Terrace.
The falsework consists of temporary steel column systems between and outside girders that support constructing the concrete deck that light-rail trains will travel over. More than 130 of the project's 188 columns are installed. In addition, fifty girder spans are now finished, Sound Transit official said in a press release.
Installation on the rest of the falsework, which will cross I-5 northbound lanes, will be completed early next year.
Work is also underway on three new parking garages, which will add 1,500 new spaces for riders in Shoreline and Lynnwood.
By 2024, the Lynnwood Link and other extensions under construction will more than double the length of the region's light-rail system. The Lynnwood extension includes four new stations serving Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline and Seattle.
Stacy & Witbeck/Kiewit/Hoffman JV and Skanska Constructors L300 JV are executing the civil construction on the extension, and Mass Electric Corp. will execute systems construction work.
