The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) last week completed installation of its One Metro New York (OMNY) contactless fare payment system across all MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) subway stations.
MTA has installed 5,000 OMNY readers at all 472 subway stations, at Staten Island Railway stations and on all 5,800 NYCT buses.
The system enables riders to pay for fares by tapping contactless bank cards or smart devices equipped with digital wallets on OMNY fare readers. Eventually, OMNY will replace the MetroCard in 2023, MTA officials said in a press release.
Since OMNY was launched at a limited number of stations in late May 2019, more than 35 million taps have been recorded. OMNY now accounts for more than 10% of all taps in the system, agency officials said.
Later this year, MTA plans to launch an OMNY mobile application.
