The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) recently announced on-time performance and other performance measures improved to historic levels in 2020 at MTA New York City Transit (NYCT), Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad (Metro-North).
MTA NYCT 2020 full-year statistics show continued performance improvements after months of gains before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Average weekday on-time performance (OTP) in 2020 was 88.6%. Contributing to improved performance were infrastructure investments including the replacement of more than 900 mechanical signal timers with digital units to improve reliability, according to an MTA press release.
A total of 95.9% of LIRR trains operated on time in 2020, the best LIRR performance since record-keeping began in 1979 and up 3.5 percentage points from 2019.
For Metro-North, 97.9% of trains operated on time in 2020, the highest level since Metro-North was founded in 1983, and 3.5 percentage points above the prior year.
