The Alaska Railroad Corp. (ARRC) has announced it will operate more passenger-rail service in summer 2021 than it did in 2020, but still not as much as the regional operated prior to the pandemic.

The revised operating schedule reduces the traditional frequency for one train, and shortens the season for all summer routes, ARRC officials said in a press release.

The modified schedule can be found here.

"We believe this schedule right-sizes service with passenger demand, which is still encouraging, given the substantial increase in total train departures compared to summer 2020," said Dale Wade, vice president of marketing and customer service.

Passenger safety remains the railroad's top priority, Wade said. ARRC has worked to keep riders and employees safe with onboard face-coverings and enhanced cleaning protocols. Onboard social-distancing measures were implemented to ensure riders have room to travel in comfort.

Railroad officials continue to monitor pandemic-related conditions and travel demand, which could require the schedule to be adjusted again.
