Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit's board (SMART) last week approved a $21.4 million capital improvement plan that calls for rail and pathway projects.
SMART plans to leverage these funds for $60 million to $80 million in construction grants, agency officials said in a press release.
Recommendations in the plan include two rail projects, advancing all remaining pathway projects to "shovel-ready" status, and making crossing safety enhancements to several existing pathway projects as part of the Sonoma County Gap Closure Project. That project includes Santa Rosa to Rohnert Park and Penngrove to Petaluma, a $13.5 million investment, scheduled to be built in 2022/23.
"In this economic environment, we should celebrate the allocation of $21.4 million to capital improvement projects," said SMART Chairman David Rabbitte. "But it should be noted that this is a result of tightening our belts and running a lean organization." Rail projects include the Healdsburg Bridge over the Russian River, south of Healdsburg and a $2 million investment for the Petaluma Second Station at Corona Road in North Petaluma, California.
