Caltrain will host a public hearing on May 20 to gather feedback on potential changes to its fare structure as the agency continues to work on recovery plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Caltrain is seeking public comment on a proposed extension of the 20% discount on the “Monthly Pass” fare product through June 30, 2023. In March, the discount was approved only through September 2021.

The agency is providing this discount to encourage people returning to work to take advantage of transit, while also providing some financial relief for those that have been riding regularly throughout the pandemic, officials with the San Jose, California, rail agency said in a press release.

Caltrain has faced unprecedented financial challenges as a result of the pandemic, according to the release. Caltrain losses in fare revenue have been significant as ridership decreased dramatically as riders stayed home to avoid spreading the disease.
