The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s (SFRTA) Tri-Rail service reached 100 million riders on July 9.

The milestone was reached 32 and a half years since the commuter railroad was launched on Jan. 9, 1989.

SFRTA Executive Director Steven Abrams and Tri-Rail staff marked the occasion that day by handing out thank-you cards to passengers that presented them an opportunity to win prizes.

"Our passengers have figured out that this service is beneficial to get you to just about anywhere you need to go in South Florida," Abrams said in a press release.

SFRTA originally prepared to reach the milestone in summer 2020, but reduced service and lower ridership during the pandemic delayed it by a year.

Tri-Rail trains are nearly back to full service, with 46 out of the normal 50 weekday trains and 28 out of the typical 30 weekend trains now operating. Weekday and weekend ridership is at 50% and 60% of pre-pandemic levels, respectively, one of the biggest comebacks of any commuter railroad in the country, SFRTA officials said.
