Recent budget legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other budget provisions under consideration by lawmakers include “unprecedented” levels of state spending on public transportation, the California Transit Association (CTA) announced yesterday.
A recently signed state budget bill, which totals $262.6 billion, includes:• $2.5 billion for the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP), an investment that supports capacity building and greenhouse gas emission-reducing priority transit and rail projects across the state;• $2.7 billion for a zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure, an investment that supports zero-emission vehicle deployment, including by California's transit agencies;• $500 million for the Active Transportation Program;• $400 million for climate adaptation on transportation infrastructure; and,• $10 million for the University of California Institute of Transportation Studies.
"These budget actions will expand California’s leadership on clean transportation, create good paying jobs, and build more equitable communities across the state," said CTA Executive Director Michael Pimentel in a press release.
The association is urging the Legislature and Newsom administration to act swiftly on outstanding budget items, "including high-speed rail, and on implementing legislation to guide investments approved for TIRCP, active transportation and climate adaptation," he said.
