The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is delaying the opening of the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station for at least five months to complete construction.
WMATA engineers determined that the original design of the automatic train control (ATC) system — which was based on specifications written by the authority — did not meet all the important operational safety requirements, WMATA officials said in a news release.
The ATC system is designed to prevent trains from operating too closely to one another and ensure trains maintain a safe distance.
Originally expected to open in April 2022, the Potomac Yard station now is anticipated to open in fall to provide WMATA more time to complete the ATC system design and implementation.
