Metra's board has approved a $28.2 million construction contract for a new Auburn Park Station on the Rock Island Line in the Auburn-Gresham community on Chicago's south side.

The contract for a new station and parking facility was awarded to John Burns Construction, which has committed to a disadvantaged business enterprise goal of 30% for the project.

The new, fully accessible station will feature a 480-foot-long platform with a polycarbonate canopy and two shelters; a staircase and two elevators between the street and platform levels; an 84-space parking lot featuring a drop-off area and covered bicycle parking; a large landscaped plaza with benches and a canopy; and a vendor building with glass storefronts.

The new station will improve access to transportation and jobs throughout the region, support economic development and opportunities in the neighborhood, and contribute to the overall health of the community, Metra officials said in a news release.
