As part of its Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) program, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is moving the historic Vautravers residential building located in the city's Lakeview East neighborhood to preserve the 127-year-old structure.
The move is necessary to prepare to completely reconstruct and straighten the century-old Red and Purple line track structures north of the Belmont Station to provide riders a smoother and faster commute on modern infrastructure, CTA officials said in a news release.
By moving the building, the CTA can remove a curve in the tracks that slows train traffic while reconstructing the entire existing track structure to increase train speeds. The reconstruction is scheduled to begin in 2022 and is expected to be completed in 2024.
Meanwhile, the authority has opened a new RPM community office in the Uptown neighborhood to provide local residents and riders opportunities to obtain information and ask questions about the project.
Expected to be completed in 2025, the RPM is the CTA’s largest transit investment. The program calls for rebuilding track structures and stations, including work to make stations more fully accessible by adding elevators and escalators.
