Sound Transit adopts realigned expansion plan

The realignment plan outlines a framework and targets for responding to an affordability gap.

Sound Transit's board last week adopted a realignment plan that aims to serve as a framework for delivering transit expansions across the region as rapidly as possible.

A steep rise in real estate and construction costs in the region, along with with advancing environmental reviews and project designs, have driven up cost estimates for future transit expansions, Sound Transit officials said in a press release. Those factors have contributed to a $6.5 billion affordability gap for delivering projects on earlier schedules, they added.

Although projects that already are under construction are not affected, the adopted realignment plan will guide the delivery dates for the next generation of voter-approved projects, Sound Transit officials said.

The adopted plan reflects estimated and affordable delivery dates for each project under current revenue and cost projections. However, for priority projects that face delays under current financial projections, it establishes more ambitious completion targets that are based on plans to intensively pursue additional financial capacity and cost reductions, Sound Transit officials said.

Details of the plan are available at www.soundtransit.org/realignment.
