Metra completes North Chicago station rehab

Metra marked the completion of the North Chicago Station rehabilitation project on Aug. 6.

The $380,000 project — which was funded by Metra and overseen by the city of North Chicago — involved an aesthetic and functional upgrade to the passenger shelter built in 1986 while preserving the station’s unique architectural character, including its modern vertical and angular design, Metra officials said in a news release.

The work addressed issues that improved the station’s function. For example, window openings were enlarged to bring in more natural light and provide better sight lines for passenger safety and security.

The shelter’s wood-sided exterior was replaced with fiber cement lap siding and veneer limestone siding designed to resist vandalism and damage from salt during the winter. The shelter’s roof was replaced with a standing-seam metal roof and new insulation.

All construction work was performed by Integral Construction Inc. of Romeoville, Illinois.
