The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has signed an agreement to redevelop the West Falls Church Station site.

The redevelopment plans calls for creating a mixed-use community with over 1 million square feet of office, retail and residential space.

The project is the result of a multi-year effort between WMATA and Fairfax County to amend comprehensive plan recommendations for the site to enhance an underutilized asset in the agency's portfolio, WMATA officials said in a press release.

In 2019, WMATA's board agreed to seek proposals for the site, then late last year advanced a joint development agreement and public hearing. The deal is expected to generate long-term revenue for the agency through 99-year ground leases and fares from new ridership.

On July 13, Fairfax County's board approved an amendment to the comprehensive plan to support development of both the WMATA site and adjoining Virginia Tech site, with mixed-use development emphasizing pedestrian enhancements connecting to the station.
