VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) has reported improved performance in second-quarter 2021 with a jump in ridership and passenger revenue of 188% and 417% respectively, compared to the same period last year.
During the quarter, VIA Rail also reached milestones in its modernization program, which includes a high frequency rail (HFR) project and new corridor fleet, VIA Rail officials said in a news release.
The April federal budget reflected the government of Canada’s support for VIA Rail’s HFR project by upgrading and building tracks dedicated to the transport of passengers between Quebec City and Toronto.
VIA Rail also revealed the design of its new fleet for the Quebec City-to-Windsor corridor. The first trainset is expected to be commissioned into revenue service in 2022.
