Metra officials this week broke ground on $36.1 million project to replace a 122-year-old railroad bridge over Milwaukee Avenue and reconstruct the adjacent Grayland Station on Chicago's north side.
The bridge on the Milwaukee District North Line near Kilbourne Avenue was built in 1899 and will be replaced with a new structure with new abutments.
Grayland Station, just south of the bridge, will be rebuilt with longer platforms, new public address equipment, visual information signs, shelters with on-demand heat on each side, new lighting, and new stairs and ramps to make the facility fully ADA-compliant, Metra officials said in a news release.
The project is being funded with $13.1 million from the Federal Transit Administration, $17.8 million from the Federal Railroad Administration, $2.3 million from Canadian Pacific and $2.9 million from Metra funding. Construction, which is being managed by IHC Construction Cos., is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
