Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) this week announced the completion of the Middletown train station project.
Amtrak service to the station will begin Jan. 10.
The new station provides additional multimodal connections, a high-level accessible boarding platform, pedestrian overpass, elevators, stair towers, on-site parking and bus loading zones. The project is part of a broader initiative to improve passenger-rail travel in Pennsylvania's Keystone Corridor, PennDOT officials said in a press release.
The $49.5 million project included right of way, design and construction work. It was funded by $25.6 million from the Federal Transit Administration, $15.9 million from PennDOT and $8 million-worth of in-kind work from Amtrak. PennDOT also collaborated with the Middletown Borough, Capital Area Transit and Harrisburg International Airport.
"The department is committed to improved transportation options, and accessibility and multimodal connections are critical when we're making investments," said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian. "This collaboration with the community, federal and transportation partners will serve the surrounding communities well into the future."
