The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), in partnership with Michigan City, Indiana, and Flaherty & Collins Properties, announced plans to build a transit-oriented development (TOD) in Michigan City.

Flaherty & Collins will develop the city block between 10th and 11th streets and Franklin and Pine streets in the heart of the city, officials said in a joint press release.

The mixed-use development will feature a 12-story high rise with a new train station for the South Shore Line (SSL), 208 luxury residential apartments, more than 10,000 feet of commercial space and a 558-space parking garage.

The project is a joint development as defined by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), which allows a private developer to undertake a public responsibility. The project will also provide the first parking garage dedicated to South Shore Line riders.

Developers will break ground in summer 2023, with the new rail station set to open by May 2024.

“With the additional trains that will be added and the reduction in travel time to and from Chicago, we expect to more than triple our daily ridership out of Michigan City,” said SSL President Michael Noland. “Projects like 11th Street Central will not only leverage off of the $16 million NICTD is contributing to the project, but will also further support our ridership."
