Transport Canada (TC) has issued a request for expressions of interest (REI) for advice from the industry on the nation's high frequency rail project.

The deadline for responding to the REI is May 2022. The high frequency rail system is the largest transportation infrastructure project that Canada has seen in decades. The system would transform passenger rail by providing faster, more sustainable service for Canadians traveling in southern Ontario and Quebec, said Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra in a press release.

The REI marks a major step in the project's procurement phase by getting feedback from the private sector and providing information to industry partners so they can prepare for the request for qualifications in fall 2022 and the request for proposals in spring 2023.

VIA Rail Canada is expected to play a large role in the advancement of the project, which could be fully operational by the early 2030s.

The Canadian government will seek a private sector partner that prioritizes and values relationships with the country’s Indigenous peoples, TC officials said.
