TransLink earlier this week announced major upgrades to Burrard Station on the SkyTrain system will be postponed due to higher-than-anticipated construction costs. The project in Vancouver, British Columbia, had been pegged to start in early 2022.
Ongoing pressures in the construction industry caused by global supply-chain issues and higher building costs have negatively impacted contractors’ bids, TransLink officials said in a press release. The agency now will develop a new scope, budget and construction timeline for the project.
"[We] will continue working with Indigenous Nations, stakeholders and government partners to ensure the station receives necessary upgrades and operates efficiently for years to come," TransLink officials said in a press release.
Expected to cost tens of millions of dollars, the upgrades would have been completed while the station was closed for two years. Built in 1985, Burrard Station has not had a significant upgrade during its 36 years of operation. Burrard — the agency’s fourth-busiest station — becomes congested during peak times because it only features three escalators and one elevator.
TransLink had planned to double the number of escalators and elevators, relocate the Burrard Street entrance, redesign the station’s outdoor plaza, and upgrade power supply and mechanical systems. The agency aims to prioritize upgrades to ensure the station remains in a state of good repair.
