New Jersey Transit has awarded two construction contracts for the rehabilitation of Roseville Tunnel and a new safe-haven for rail cars.
The Roseville Tunnel is a key part of passenger-rail service from Port Morris to a proposed station in Andover, NJ Transit officials said in a press release. The station is expected to be completed in 2026.
The agency signed the contract with Schiavone Construction Co. of Secaucus. The $32.5 million contract calls for the final design, construction and commissioning of the Roseville Tunnel rehabilitation, which is part of the larger Lackawanna Cutoff Restoration project. That project focuses on restoring passenger-rail service to the east end of the Lackawanna Cutoff between Port Morris and Andover, replacing nearly 7 miles of track.
Schiavone will stabilize rock slopes; construct 8,000 feet of track bed; make drainage, lighting and communication improvements' and replace two culverts.
The agency also signed a $6.08 million contract with Union Paving to begin early action work on the Delco Lead Storage and Inspection Facility in New Brunswick, which when completed will provide a safe storage for rail cars and locomotives during severe weather. Equipment stationed at the facility would be out of flood-prone areas and be able to quickly return to service on the Northeast Corridor and other lines, agency officials said.
The contract provides for the project's first construction phase. The project was proposed after Hurricane Sandy struck the New Jersey coastline in 2012. The early action phase is anticipated to be completed in late summer 2023.
