The North County Transit District in Southern California this week announced it completed insourcing of its rail equipment maintenance and train operations functions.
The transition brings the primary functions of NCTD’s commuter- and hybrid-rail services under its direct management, including nearly 100 employees, NCTD officials said in a press release.
The new operations model is designed to create efficiencies and improve safety and service, they said. Included in the new operations model are maintenance of Coaster and Sprinter services, as well as preventative and minor reactive maintenance and work-order requests. Maintenance-of-way functions will still be outsourced.
NCTD provides transit to nearly 4 million riders every year. The Coaster service runs along 41 miles with eight stations between Oceanside and San Diego, California, while the Sprinter service operates on 22 miles with 15 stations between Escondido and Oceanside.
