A California regional partnership led by the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) has been awarded nearly $50 million in funding from the California State Transportation Agency's Transit and Intercity Rail Capitol Program (TIRCP).
Most of the funding will go toward transit projects in Sacramento, including improvements at the Sacramento Valley Station, a new regional bus layover and vehicle charging facility, new enhanced regional transit stops and state-of-the-art transit fare payment technology.
The partnership includes Sacramento Regional Transit District, Sacramento Area Council of Governments and the city of Sacramento. The funding will advance the partnership’s goal to transform the station into Northern California’s largest rail and transit hub by increasing ridership, encouraging transit-oriented development, reducing car dependence and decreasing emissions. More transit services are slated to come to the station, making it the busiest train station in the region, CCJPA officials said in a press release.
“[The state's] investment will not only establish the station as a transportation hub for the Northern California mega-region, but will also increase the safety and reliability of our rail and transit systems," said CCJPA Board Chair Don Saylor.
Meanwhile, the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission this week secured $57 million in TIRCP funds to extend the Valley Rail Program from Ceres to Turlock, California. Valley Rail is a joint program designed to improve and expand rail service between the San Joaquin Valley, Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.
The southern segment extends Altamont Corridor Express service to Ceres with plans to further extend to connect with high-speed rail at a multimodal station in downtown Merced. The grant will fund projects associated with future ACE service ahead of California High-Speed Rail initial operations.
"The TIRCP investment in Valley Rail brings much needed funding to the San Joaquin Valley where residents need multi-modal travel options," said SJRRC Executive Director Stacey Mortensen in a press release.
