Metrolinx has completed a rehabilitation project on the 118-year-old Rouge River Bridge in east Toronto.

Crews repaired the bridge's superstructure and substructure, replaced timber deck ties and track, relocated and protected existing communication utilities; built a new approach slab; and replaced retaining walls and 82 feet of track on each side of the bridge.

The bridge is designated a Provincial Heritage Property due to its superstructure and substructure, leading to its rehabilitation instead of total replacement, Metrolinx officials said last week in a blog post.

The bridge provides a connection for the Lakeshore East GO Line — the second-busiest route on GO Transit's network — that runs between Toronto and Pickering, Ontario.
