The Chicago Transit Authority late last week issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for contracting teams to design and build the Red Line Extension.
The transit agency aims to pre-qualify potential contractors because commencing construction is dependent on securing more funding, CTA officials said in a press release. Doing so will help expedite the project's development and ensure CTA maintains its timeline to begin construction as early as 2025.
Once a pool of prequalified candidate teams is selected and finalized, the CTA will issue a design-build request for proposals, perhaps by mid-2023. The agency plans to host numerous outreach events to encourage project participation by disadvantaged business enterprise-certified firms and other minority-owned firms.
The $3.6 billion project calls for extending the Red Line by 5.6 miles from the existing southern terminal at 95th Street to 130th Street, expanding the south side's access to jobs, education, commerce and other opportunities, CTA officials said. In addition, four new rail stations and a new rail-car storage yard and maintenance facility will be built.
