The Toronto Transit Commission announced last week it hit a milestone of 33 billion rides on its overall transit system since its inception in 1921.
The commission logged 1 billion riders in just over three years — most of that time during the pandemic — since it surpassed 32 billion riders in mid-2019.
As ridership continues to recover from the effects of COVID-19, the commission is implementing a number of measures to support an increased demand for transit service, TTC officials said in a press release. In September, service was increased systemwide to meet back-to-school demand, including the addition of more trains on Lines 1 and 2.
TTC also recently completed the installation of an automatic train control signaling system on Line 1, which will help support more frequent and reliable service, commission officials said.
