TransLink in British Columbia is now offering to "certify" companies as "transit friendly" if they subsidize their employees' transit expenses.

The first of its kind in Canada, the certification program provides participants an "official stamp recognizing their commitment to supporting transit," TransLink officials said in a press release.

To become certified, employers must pay at least half the cost of every employee's transit pass. Companies with over 200 employees are required to cover at least 10% of employees, while those with less than 200 people will need to cover at least 25% of employees in order to qualify.

The program helps companies meet their commitments to climate action by reducing car usage, TransLink officials said. It also can help businesses retain workers by covering part of their transportation costs, which are among the highest household expenses in British Columbia.

Roughly 20% of all work trips are made on public transit in the region, according to TransLink.
