The Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority yesterday announced the Potomac Yard Station will open in May 2023.
The station’s opening has been delayed multiple times — it was last expected to open for service in October, but was pushed back due to the project’s contractor not meeting the delivery deadline.
Work to connect the station and new tracks with the rest of the WMATA rail system was completed last month, WMATA officials said in a press release. Crews are working on completing station construction, while agency staff still need to finish critical safety reviews and training prior to opening for service, they added.
Located in Alexandria, Virginia, the new station is situated between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road stations on the Blue and Yellow lines. Its construction, jump-started by the city of Alexandria, is funded by tax revenue; developer contributions generated by planned new retail, residential and commercial development in the Potomac Yard neighborhood; and state grants and loans.
