The proposed double-track project on the South Shore Line between Gary and Michigan City, Indiana, has qualified for a $27.5 million loan through the federal Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) program, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced last week.
The loan will finance part of the $649 million project that involves building nearly 18 miles of double track and installing an overhead power system along a 26.6-mile segment of the South Shore Line, which is operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD), USDOT officials said in a press release.
The project calls for creating separate vehicular traffic along 2 miles of street-running rail, upgrading five stations, eliminating 13 grade crossings and adding 1,475 parking spaces. Remaining crossings on the segment will be upgraded with automatic warning devices, including flashers, gates and bells.
Construction will be completed by the end of 2024, USDOT officials said.
