The U.S. Department of Transportation last week announced the availability of nearly $9 billion in funding to upgrade and expand passenger-rail service along the Northeast Corridor (NEC).
The funds will be issued through the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Grant Program, which has increased to $36 billion over the next five years under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Applications are due in 90 days. The notice of funding opportunity was published today in the Federal Register.
The grants will help fund projects that will improve bridges, tunnels, rail stations and track. The projects are designed to improve reliability and result in fewer delays for the over 200 million annual trips taken by commuters and intercity passenger riders on the corridor, USDOT officials said in a press release.
The Federal Railroad Administration administers the partnership program.
The NEC stretches from Washington, D.C., to Boston, and is one of the highest-volume rail lines in the world. The number of Americans using the corridor is approaching pre-pandemic levels, with Amtrak ridership alone more than doubling in the past 12 months to 9.2 million passengers annually.
