New Jersey Transit will host informational sessions today on the agency's plans to improve and expand the Walter Rand Transportation Center (WRTC) in Camden.
The hearings will be held virtually and in person. To register for the virtual session, which will be held at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, click here.
At the hearings, NJ Transit representatives will disseminate information about the project to attendees, and also allocate time for public comment sessions.
In October 2021, NJ Transit awarded a contract to HNTB Corp. to begin the design process of rebuilding the center to be a larger facility. Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration has committed $250 million to the project.
With the emergence of a burgeoning educational and health-care corridor in the downtown area and surrounding vicinity, a multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the nearby waterfront is being proposed to the west of downtown and the headquarters for both the Campbell Soup Co. and Subaru of America to the east.
Constructed in 1989 and owned by the agency, the WRTC is the largest transportation hub in Camden and serves the River Line light-rail route and 26 NJ Transit bus lines. The hub also provides connectivity to the Port Authority Transit Corp.'s Speedline subway, Greyhound bus services and the South Jersey Transportation Authority’s shuttle.
