The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority yesterday announced a new partnership between its Metro Transit Police Department and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.
The two departments will work together to increase police presence on the transit network to improve public safety and security, WMATA officials said in a press release.
Officers from both departments will partner on patrols at stations and transit centers beginning next week and continuing through June. The first patrols will take place at Metro Center, Gallery Place, Georgia Avenue-Petworth, Congress Heights and Union stations.
WMATA is funding the extra patrols and expects to finalize agreements with police departments in other jurisdictions, WMATA officials said.
Meanwhile, WMATA is also seeking public input through Feb. 14 on its draft multiyear strategic transformation plan, called #YourMetro, The Way Forward.
The plan addresses the goals of service excellence, talented teams, regional opportunity and partnership, and sustainability. WMATA's board and management developed the plan with input from riders, staff and regional stakeholders.
