The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority yesterday marked the opening of its new office at New Carrollton, a transit-accessible hub for offices, housing and retail.
WMATA’s newest building combines its customer service call centers and MetroAccess paratransit services. It also serves as the headquarters for the agency’s police force, WMATA officials said in a press release. The 324,000-square-foot space is LEED Gold certified and will be used by 1,200 employees.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by WMATA General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen (both D-Md.), Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld, who is WMATA's former CEO, and WMATA Chair Paul Smedberg.
"This building represents [us] stepping further into a sustainable future," Clarke said.
Other projects involving the New Carrollton hub include expansion plans funded by a $20.5 million federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant. Those plans include construction of a new train hall, preparation for the arrival of the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration’s Purple Line, and new trails and walkways to upgrade pedestrian and bike access.
