The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority yesterday issued a request for qualifications for design-build teams to work on the north end of the Long Bridge rail project.
The 117-year-old bridge regularly operates at 98% capacity and is a chokepoint for rail traffic along the Virginia East Coast, VPRA officials said in a press release.
The nearly $2 billion project calls for the construction of a modern two-track rail bridge crossing the Potomac River, adjacent to the existing bridge, to connect Virginia and Washington, D.C. The bridge design will separate freight- and passenger-rail traffic, which will improve on-time performance for both types of rail, VPRA officials said.
Also, additional capacity is needed to meet expected future demand, VPRA officials added.
The Long Bridge Project-North Package RFQ is the first of a two-step procurement process, which calls for a progressive design-build project delivery method. The RFQ addresses work in the area surrounding the bridge, including construction of a rail bridge over Interstate 395 and the replacement of three rail bridges and a pedestrian bridge, VPRA officials said.
RFQ submissions are due May 5.
