The Utah Transit Authority this week marked the 15th anniversary of its FrontRunner commuter-rail service.
On April 16, 2008, FrontRunner service began between Salt Lake City and Ogden, and now connects to Provo and other destinations across the Wasatch Front, UTA officials said in a press release. It was the first commuter-rail service established in Utah.
FrontRunner serves 16 stations over 83 miles and was built in less than seven years. Since its launch, Frontrunner has carried more than 48 million riders since launch, UTA officials said. The railroad has an average weekday ridership of 12,100 passengers as of first-quarter 2023.
In 2018, UTA began upgrading FrontRunner locomotives from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 0 to Tier 2 emission standards, reducing air pollution by 29%. Half of the locomotive fleet has been upgraded so far.
The transit agency will hosting rider appreciation events at the Ogden, Salt Lake City and Provo central stations April 26.
