The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) announced last week it received $35 million from the California Transportation Commission to improve its light-rail system.
Of those funds, $25 million comes from the Solutions for Congested Corridors program and will support the relocation of light-rail tracks and the Sacramento Valley Station to a north-south alignment as part of the Railyard Revitalization program, SacRT officials said in a press release.
The dollars also will support the future Sacramento Downtown Riverfront Streetcar project, which will offer rail service along 7th and 8th streets and N Street over Tower Bridge into the western part of the city. The project calls for building double track on 7th Street and constructing a new station at Railyards Boulevard.
The remaining $10 million comes from the Local Partnership Program and will fund light-rail station platform modernization efforts along the Gold Line to meet the height requirements of new low-floor light-rail vehicles, SacRT officials said. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion on the nearby Highway 50.
SacRT already has secured nearly $400 million for the modernization project, which includes the purchase of the new low-floor trains, modifications to existing platforms and the addition of a passing track to provide 15-minute service to Folsom-area stations. SacRT purchased 28 vehicles from Siemens Mobility and is prepared to buy 16 more units, agency officials said.
